Looking Back... And Forward (to thirty!)

Not only is January a time for retrospection and new beginnings, it's also my birth month. I'm not here to solicit birthday greetings from you all or to complain about how much a January birthday sucks (I've done my fair share of that growing up). Nope, this time I can actually say I'm looking forward to my birthday and not because I need a big party/celebration, but because I'm turning 30. 3 - 0.

Guys, I remember when my mom turned 30. We had a huge surprise party with those terrible "over the hill" signs. Ya, sorry about that mom - let's blame Dad. 30 seemed so old and so far away. Well, here I am and you know what, I like it. It's definitely not old and not the scary thing some people make it out to be. I've got some lovely friends who tell me their thirties have been their best decade so far. My nana always said that you're only as young as you feel and to be proud of you who you are at any age, so bring it on 30.

I know 30 isn't a magic number or anything. Things aren't perfect, I'm still trying to figure things out, who I am, what I want to be when I grow up, how I'm ever going to stay on top of housework, but as I get older I find I'm pretty happy just figuring it all out. I have great friends, an amazing family, a loving husband, a daughter who makes me smile every day - life is pretty good. 30 is looking pretty good.

So I guess that's the looking forward part, and since I'm being all reflective and stuff let's look back at 2012. With a new life to take care of this past year, blogging took a bit of a back seat, but that didn't stop me from being nosy and peeking in on my blog stats. If I'm going to do a rerun it better be with the good stuff, right? Here we go... just bella's top 12 of 2012.

Thanks for bearing with me through quite possibly the longest post ever! Hope you get up to something fun this weekend. I've got a relaxing weekend planned with my family and friends and a lemon meringue cake with my name on it.

Happy Friday!

Oh, and tell me, how did you (or will you) handle turning 30?

  2. I celebrated turning 30 by running away to Turkey... avoidance tactics really :)

  3. My 30th birthday this year was a memorable one. It had been a tough few months, and I decided to wake up and go for a run to clear my mind. It was a beautiful day and I felt great - then, while in the trees in a park near my house, an owl swooped really close to me, and then perched in a tree ahead of me. I took it to be a great omen for the year ahead since I love owls, and found out later that week that I was expecting again :)

I also did a 30 before 30 list, and completed many of them (not all - but lots!) and I'm hoping to do another one again this year :)

Hope you have a wonderful birthday!!!

    1. Thank you so much for sharing this, Morgan. I can only imagine the emotional year that would have been for you. I'd say it was definitely a great omen, especially seeing you and that sweet little Scarlett together :)

      I sorta wish I'd done a 30 before 30 list... maybe a 31 before 31??

  4. Have a wonderful 30th Christine!

30 is a distant memory... well, okay only nearly 4 full years ago. And I can't quite recall how we celebrated that year... What I do know is that, in my 30s, I've really established who I want to become. Mostly because of this beautiful growing brood of mine.

    Cheers!

  6. Happy Birthday Christine, I know having a birthday in January sucks especially the first part of it. I remember when you were growing up if I didn't get your present before Christmas it was well picked over and they hadn't stocked the shelves. I also remember when I turned 30 and the party you guys gave me. I love you lots and I am looking forward to spending the weekend with you and having our spa day today.

  7. first off, I really love your laundry room, I love the colour combo of red and grey! second, 30 is just a number. I'm turning 35 this year and the number seems daunting, but I'm only as old as I feel and act...which is probably about 12. :)

  8. Happy 30th Birthday Christine! Yay Alice's 1st Birthday made the top 12. :)
I just turned 30 in September and so far 30 has been amazing. I was always the girl who thought 30 was so old and now I can't believe I am here. Plus I hear 30 is the new 20 ;) Enjoy xo

  11. Turning 30 had me incredibly at odds. I was incredibly happy in [and with] my life, family, friends and all the events about to occur [baby Jack was about to be born!], but i felt like a piece of my childhood was going away with that big ol' number. Then I realized, you're only as old as you feel and well, I felt great. So bring on 30! And when I read this post I was smiling from ear-to-ear to hear you mention that exact same thing.

Happy Birthday Beautiful blog friend. I wish you a purely lovely day/week/year!

  17. Oh Christine, I might be the oldest friend here! (Maybe my other over 40 friends don't keep young in heart and mind by reading really cool blogs like yours? Their loss!) I have to say that my 30s were magical. After being blown about in the wind all over the world through my 20s (so fun, don't get me wrong!), I found deep roots and a true sense of community in my 30s and have embraced and enjoyed every minute. And 40 is even better from where I'm standing! Enjoy all your blessings and may they come back to you 30-fold! xox Lisa

  19. I turned 36 this month, and I have to say the thirties are my favorite decade so far. I have a much better sense now of who I am and what I want, and I am more comfortable in my skin. . . but I still feel great! Like a teenager! (In terms of physical strength and energy.) The forties however. . . I am a little nervous. LOL.
Happy Birthday and I hope you enjoy your thirties as much as I have!
