Keepin' it Real: Social Media Free Sunday Update

A while back I wrote about my 'social media free sunday' adventure. The idea was to spend my Sundays, a day that has always been family time around here, and unplug. No facebook, no twitter, and most importantly, no instagram (my real addiction ;) Basically, a "back away from the phone, Christine," kind of day.

How's it going you ask? Well, I wouldn't say that I am consistently practicing 'social media free sundays' more like 'almost social media free sundays' or 'sometimes social media free sundays'.

Because, let's be honest, I cheat.

There are those days where Alice is napping, Mike is golfing, I'm stuck in a car on a road trip or you know there is something just thaaat interesting I need to respond to. Yep, the excuses are easy, but the important thing is I am so much more aware of it now.

I've learned to let go of that feeling that I need to be connected and realize that it's nice to step away (and fun to come back). I've learned that I don't neeeed to have my phone near me at all times, that it's ok to unplug for a bit and hey, it's actually kind of nice. It's nice to be present, no distractions.

So while I'll never be unplugging completely, I'm working to find that balance and you know, talk to the people right in front of me. I highly recommend a good tech break every now and then, it's good for the soul :)

be-all-there

Do any of you attempt to unplug? Any other cheater confessions? ;)

Christine

    1. I love the idea of "phone free evenings" cait! I could see that being tough at times, haha, but it is worth a shot! Even for a few evenings a week, good luck!

  2. Yes, yes, and yes!
Now that my days are spent working in social media, I've really felt the need to stay away from my phone more during evenings and weekends. It was a bit over whelming. But for some reason, I still couldn't keep away. So a few weeks ago, I finally deleted some major apps from my phone to help keep me away. And it's worked (for now)! I'm on it a lot less and kinda loving it.

    1. Nice work, Amy! That's the way to do it, I think! I find that on work days where I'm on the computer all day, I have waaay less desire to hop on it or my phone at night too.

  3. Thanks for keeping it real Christine. I've been doing social media free Sundays too, and le husband and I just started screen-free evenings a couple of nights per week so we actually spend time talking to each other instead of just updating one another on what's happening in our respective social media channels. :) I also make a point of leaving my phone at home at certain times, like when I take my little guy for a walk. It feels good to power down, and when I check in again I usually find I haven't missed all that much anyway.

  4. I've tried to do one night a week computer free. It is HARD! by 10pm I am usually dying and I need to check my email or edit some photos. But, those nights I feel like I get so much done. The house is clean, a project is done and I have watched 2 hours of tv. when does that ever happen? It is freeing though. no need to answer people or wonder if that was my phone dinging...just keep on playing kitchen with the 2 year old and the world is good :)

  5. i think its a great idea, and me and the mr should make more of an effort. i like having a timeline attached to it too - otherwise its way too easy to forget!

  6. I've realized that I tend to not get on IG when we're traveling....so this means I need to travel more so I can break my IG habit ;-)

It was all thanks to you & SMFS's that I've learned to step away from IG & just live in the moment. Hope you know that you're pretty awesome.

  8. I am on baby steps. I'm taking mini tech breaks throughout the day. I'm just breaking the habit of always pulling out my phone when I'm the passenger in the car and just being present for conversation or silence or whatever. I realized I was always pulling out my phone and only half-listening to whoever was driving. Bad!
